Instructions: Many students expand their view of the world during their time in college. Such growth often results from encounters between students who have lived different cultural, economic, or academic experiences. With your future growth in mind, describe a potential classmate that you believe you could learn from either within or outside a formal classroom environment.
This is a college admission essay for a transfer student applying as a business major. You have to pick a student that has lived a different cultural economic OR academic experience (just one) and elaborate on how you could learn from them with your future growth in mind. I am Caucasian, so maybe you can write about someone from a different culture.
My Potential Classmate
Fr. Lawton once said that the university is a sacred space where you find "your imagination empowered, your skill developed, and your compassion enriched." A person who is going to attend a college can hope to meet many different kinds of students from all wakes of life. I believe that if I were to have a friend who came from some other country than mine, or some who was from a different social, ethnic, and cultural background, would enrich me with so much new and wonderful information. I believe that a relationship with such a person would greatly enhance my knowledge base and give me first hand information about the other person's culture and norms. This kind of exposure is essential in a person's personal development.
Studying with students from all different kinds of economic, ethnic and social backgrounds helps the person attending college into learning more about the world and this brings the people of the world closer as well. People at colleges come from every aspect of life; a person going to college is bound to interact with his classmates who can come from all sorts of different countries, cultures and generations. This interaction is another valuable aspect of a college education and it helps shape a person's personality in a way that is unmatched by any other kind of an institution, whether it be a church or a home. A person, perhaps, learns the most throughout his or her college years and this not only includes academic education but also education in the social and political realms. In this age of globalization, it is very important that one understands the cultural and social attitudes of people from across the borders. This is why I believe that having a classmate with these characteristics would greatly enhance my knowledge of his/her age, and allow me to conduct better business with them in the later, more professional, years of my life.
